Hi

Using Windows XP Pro. Have 2 other PCs connected to me, using a hub, one
with XP Pro, other with XP home.

I have a few folders which I share on the network. However, I would like to
be able to determine which of the PCs connected can actually access the
folders. For example, PC1 can access Folder1, but PC2 cannot access
Folder1, even though I've made the folder sharable. I'm assuming this would
be controlled by a password. Whilst I can see how to share a folder and to
prevent other users from amedning the files within that folder, I do not
know how I can control which PCs have access to folders I would like to
share. Assuming this can be done, of course.

Could anyone help, or point me to useful websites on this matter?

Thank you.

First, the bad it isn't possible to control access based on what
PC is requesting it, and Windows XP doesn't have passwords for shared
folders.

Now, the good in Windows XP Pro, you can disable "simple file
sharing" and specify access permissions based on user names. This web
page has full details:

Thank you. However, when getting to the page, 'Create User Groups', step 6
onwards, I cannot find the computer that I wish to add to the group. I can
see this computer in the workgroup, however.

Because of this, I cannot complete the exercise.

Any suggestions as to why this is the case?

Thank you

You're welcome, Ben. I think that you're almost there.

XP Professional controls access based on user names, not based on
computer names. Give each person who uses your network a unique user
name, and use the user names to create user groups.
