I am running two mahcines (XP & 2K) through a LinkSys
Router which connects to DSL. I was trying to get to the
point where I could share folders between the two
machines. It was recommended that I install NETBEUI on
both machines, after doing so on my XP machine, I lost
internet access completely. So I tried removing NETBEUI
from my XP machine, I still can not access the internet,
this I have tried:

The 2K machine works fine, with either a static or dynamic
address. On the XP machine, if I use DHCP, it does not get
an address, the XP machine ends up with 169.254.x.y & sub
of 255.255.0.0. However, if I go in and set up a static
IP, I am able to PING the router and the 2K machine (and
the 2K machine can PING the XP machine). I have tried
reinstalling XP but with no luck.

I have checked, and disable, firewall settings and port
filering with no luck; AIM never connects and IE states
that I am not connected and asks if I want to work
offline...

Can someone help?

Thanks,

Greg

Try starting from the beginning.

Access your Router and delete the IP address it is giving
the XP machine.
Make sure all setting in XP are correct and run Internet
connection wizard, add NetBEUI after you can connect to
the internet.
And Also have IPX/SPX installed

http://www.wown.com may help too

Hope it helps.

I strongly recommend using TCP/IP as the only networking protocol.
Your Linksys router protects your network from access by other
Internet users, so there's no benefit to using another protocol.

Microsoft has dropped support for NetBEUI in Windows XP. That means
that you can install NetBEUI from the CD-ROM and use it on the
network, but you can't get help with it if something goes wrong.

If you assign a static IP address to XP, be sure to make all of these
settings (assuming that the router's IP address is 192.168.1.1):

IP Address: 192.168.1.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS Server = your ISP's DNS servers

DHCP should work. Try the suggestions on this web page:
