Can you tell me, I have just formatted my pc, which previously had windows
98 and I have installed windows xp. However, apart from not detecting the
sound card, the bigger problem is, it finally detected the modem, however
every time I disconnect the modem, the pc shuts down.
Can anyone help solve this one.
It sounds like the driver is misfiring when disconnecting the modem. The
error is serious enough that it is causing the computer to shutdown. The
default setting in Windows XP is to restart on a system error so either the
error is so serious that it bypasses this mechanism or there is a fault
with the physical hardware.
A good place to start would be checking Event Viewer to see if it is
trapping any error information about the modem. Next would be trying a new
driver for the modem that is marked as being XP compatible.
Other suggestions:
If you have another modem available, it wouldn't hurt to swap out the one
you're using now and giving it a try. Even if a bit older, it's chipset may
be more compatible with XP than the one you're currently using.
Worse case scenario would be installing a new modem. These are relatively
inexpensive and any hardware/software package on the shelf today would be
more XP "ready" than a modem package from the Win98-era.
One more thought: If using any modem software in addition to basic drivers,
check for updated versions that are marked for use with XP as well.
