For the last couple of months, I've had the following problem. When I
startup my desktop, about 1/2 the time I'll get the screen wallpaper, but no
desktop icons or taskbar. I'll have to do a hard shutdown at the tower and
start over. It usually starts up okay on the second try.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thank you Will, but it's actually the startup screen for the entire Windows
XP system that's doing this. I can usually tell when it's going to happen
because the blue "welcome" screen stays on about 3x longer than normal. Then
my desktop image comes up, sans icons or taskbar.......

Since this is a random occurrence, it is probably hardware-related. It
does not matter if the computer is new. Here are general hardware
troubleshooting steps. I would start with the power supply.

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).
