A lot of new machines are now coming with the Media edition
of Win XP. A not necessarily knowledgeable informant
says this is "almost" XP Professional. Is this so, and
if so what is missing -- anything that a home network
would miss? Thanks.

Windows XP Media Edition is Windows XP Professional. It has had its ability
to join a domain removed (after installation and without hacking.) In
almost all other aspects it is fully functional as a Windows XP Professional
substitute and thus - provides MORE than the average home user would need.

The only two features that are not in XP MCE that are in XP Home are domain
join and cached credentials.

Aside from those two features, XP MCE has additional media related
functionality that XP Pro does not have.
