I was notified of an available update and installed it.
Now when I go back to the Microsoft web site to see if
there are any more updates I get the following message
from the Microsoft web site:

Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that
helps you get the most out of your computer.

The latest version of Windows Update is available on
computers that are running Microsoft Windows 98, Windows
98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows
2000 (except Windows 2000 Datacenter Server), Windows XP,
and the Windows Server 2003 family.

What is causing this?

That happened to me, too, when I used "Windows Update" from the IE Tools
menu. I fixed it by first going to www.microsoft.com and then selecting the
"Windows Update" link on the left side of that page. After that, it worked
again as usual. My guess is (and it's based on rumor and things like
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,1221670,00.asp, so it may be completely
bogus) that, since the Blaster worm mounted a DoS attack against that site,
that Microsoft simply turned it off for a while.
