xp media edition freezes on microsoft blue page on start up

I recently started using 2 external hardrives on 2 usb ports. If i leave
them plugged in, computer freezes on next cold boot, When I remove them ,
Normal start... What the what? Do I need to cjhange a setting or driver (one
of the ehds has been plugged in for months. Seems to be the addition of the
second that's causing trouble....)

It sounds like the computer is trying to boot from the USB drives.
It's possible a settings change in the BIOS would correct this.
