XP - Mainboard question

I have a MSI K8N Neo V2.0 mainboard running AMD Athlon 64 3000+
processor. There are two IDE drives on IDE port 1, and two DVD
drives on IDE port 2.

The board also has 2 SATA drive ports, SATA 1 and SATA2. The manual
is not clear on this, so perhaps someone here might know the answer,
and I wrote to technical support at MSI but have not received a reply
yet.

Can I add another hard drive to the SATA 1 port or SATA 2 port, while
keeping the present IDE setup with Hard drives and DVD drives? The
manual is not too clear in this regard, and before I go plunk down $80
for a SATA drive would like to know if it will work along with the
other IDE stuff. I guess XP would handle it OK, is that right?

I never used a SATA drive so know nothing about them except they use
serial transfer vs parallel. How do they compare speed-wise?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Jim

If you have the available ports then I don't see any problem. I
don't think it's much
different then when I connect another hard drive to my Raid Controller
Channel.

My motherboard requires me to opt for Enhanced Mode (BIOS selection) when
using both IDE and SATA devices. Should be mentioned in the owner's manual
somewhere.

Yes.

Yes.

Personally I haven't seen much of a diference, but then again I haven't set up
RAID.
Thanks for any suggestions.

How big is your power supply? If you add a third hard drive to the
system you may be in danger of overloading it.

SATA is faster than IDE, but only marginally so. Seagate said the
difference is about 5%. But SATA is an evolving technology and the
new SATA II drives are significantly faster than IDE.

Depends. If you have enough available ports, If your Power Supply is big enough to handle it and many other variables which includes your OS.

You need to read up on this a little and find out if your box is able to handle it

You certainly can. I have two IDE drives, 2 CD/DVD burners, and two SATA
drives in my computer. I have the two SATA drives set up as RAID 0
(independent drives), and I even use one of them for my 'C' drive.

Find the motherboard manual to figure out how to set up the SATA as a RAID.
