I have 2 XP machines that cannot browse win2k computers
via computer names or map a network drive via a computer
name(ie. \\SERVER001)
I can ping the computername succesfully, and if I put in
the server IP I can connect (ie. \\192.168.1.222).
Firewall is disabled
Using DHCP
No Domain Controller

Kind regards,
Lyle Spencer, MCP

UPDATE: Now a win2k pro machine is doing the same thing.
Checked for Blaster, appears clean on all computers.

Interesting, but I have the opposite problem and it is
making me crazy. I have two boxes connected through a
router that provides cable modem Internect connectivity.
I just upgraded one box running w2k pro to XP Pro. From
that box I can ping and access the other box that is
still running w2k pro. However, the w2k box can ping the
XP machine and see the XP machine in My Network but I
cannot access its C Drive or printer that I need to
share. Both the C Drive and printer on the XP machine
are set up for sharing, the guest user is active on both
computers, and I have identical users set up on both
boxes. I'm running Zone Alarm pro on the two boxes and
the router, but I have the Trusted Zone settngs set to
Off on both machines. The error message I get when I try
to connect to the XP box from the w2k box is "\\pcclubxp
is not accessile. The remote procedure call failed."

Any help would be much appreciated. I stayed up all
night trying to get this to work and it is making me nuts.

Have you checked the RPC service in Admin tools? - I assume this stops on
the error

It can't be a firewall problem since access by IP address works.

Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection and click Properties.
3. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4. Click Advanced.
5. Click WINS.
6. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.
