I have a strange situation with my DELL GX 260 machine (desktop) (win XP Pro
SP2): this has been happening for the last 2 weeks.

Every morning at 7am it boots up by itself. I always place it in Hibernate
mode.

I have not changed anything in my BIOS and I have checked that WOL is NOT on
and that I don't have it set to switch on automatically.

Could the BIOS be damaged?

Just as a test I also tried to set the BIOS last night to come on at 7.30pm
but nothing happened - instead it just booted by itself this morning (from
hibernate) at 7am again.

Every once in a while I also get the message that the battery is running
low.

Battery??? Do you have a UPS installed on this desktop PC????

Did it occur to you that every Desktop computer has a battery in it? What
do you think keeps the clock running when the machine is unplugged?

The battery in question is the CMOS battery, located on the motherboard
itself. If it is running down, it needs to be replaced. Its probably a
little coin battery type CR2032 (but may vary). The warning that you are
getting suggests that the time is near.

thanks Bob, it was the task scheduler. I NEVER knew the task scheduler
could wake a computer!

You're quite welcome, and yes if the BIOS supports it and you use
hibernate or standby, you may instruct Scheduled task to "wake computer
to do this task".
