My computer froze..I told it to shut down and it never would..so I had to
turn it off and then back on..When it came back on my toolbars and setting
had changed...then I realized that my network connections had been lost, a
lot of XP files (such as help and system restore) are now not able to be
open, and things look different. All my files are still there..but I am
clueless on how to get this thing to work..Microsoft wont help cause its a
dell..but dell is not so good at internet support..PLEASE HELP!!

At this point, your best course of action would be to take the machine
to a good local professional and have them sort it out. It isn't
possible to diagnose what went wrong with your machine, although there
is a good possibility you had malware on the system which would cause
the difficulties in shutting down. It sounds like the operating system
files were corrupted by the shutdown, or you might have viruses, or you
might have hardware problems. There is just no way to tell from the
information you've provided.

Have the computer professional retrieve any important data that wasn't
backed up and clean install Windows.

Good luck,

You can attempt to install a SPyware Application such as Spybot Search and
Destroy.

Use a friend's PC to get this from the internet as it is free.

Install it and run it on your PC. If it detects and removes a lot of crud,
then you should be able to use your PC effectively again.

If it still shows signs of being changed, then consider that you need to
perform a Repair installation of XP using the origninal Installation CD.
This will not affect any applications or personal data and settings.

Make sure that you maintain a good defence shield around your PC: 3 things
are required as a minimum:
1. Reliable Firewall
2. Best Anti Virus Application you can afford
3. Reliable Spyware Application [may be best to get Spybot and Ad-Aware]
