XP locks up when connecting via modem to ISP

I am setting up a computer with winXP and am trying to
connect to my ISP (Centurytel.net) via modem and
everytime I get connected XP locks up. What should I
look at?
 
Your TCP/IP settings. Find out whether your ISP is assigning DHCP settings
and your machine is set to allow this...

OR; delete your dial-up connection, restart, and recreate it.

First off, uninstall then reinstall the modem. If this doesn't help, look
for XP drivers for the modem on the web site of the company who made it.

If that doesn't work, you may have a stuffed modem.
