Hi,

I bought a new notebooks that came with Windows Vista. I have an older
notebook that has Windows XP Pro. I still depend on a few older applications
that do not work on Vista. I travel alot, and I have been forced to carry
both notebooks with me.

I would like to install Windows XP on the new notebook in a dual-boot setup
with Vista. Can anyone tell me if I can do this using the Windows XP
CD/product key that came with the old notebook? If so, do I have to remove
Windows XP from the old notebook? (I am the only user of both of these
notebooks, so I would never actually be using XP at the same time on both
notebooks.)

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

If your Windows XP was supplied/pre-installed by the manufacturer (OEM
version) it is tied to the computer and cannot be transfered to another.

Yes, and most , if not all, laptops come with OEM versions of Windows. But
even if it's retail, not OEM, to answer his question, he can *not* have the
single license on both machines at once.

I addressed your specific question in another post, but are you sure these
apps won't work under Vista? What are they? Have you tried running them in
compatibility mode?

Which apps are they? Have you tried posting to a Vista group to see if these
are working in that environment?
If you can install XP you will need to uninstall it from the old notebook as
you can't have XP installed on two different systems at the same time using
the same product key. If your version of XP isn't an OEM version you can
setup a dual boot. If you don't know how to do that ensure you consult with
the Vista newsgroups to see how to do that properly.

First off, have you tried running these applications in a
WinXP-compatibility mode? Right-click on the pertinent application's
Shortcut > Properties > Compatibility Tab.

And, if necessary, rather than dual-booting, why not download a Virtual
Machine application, such as Microsoft's VirtualPC 2007
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.asp?) or Innotek's VirtualBox
(http://www.virtualbox.org/) and run WinXP (once you've purchased a
legitimate license, of course) and your legacy applications within a
virtual computer. Both are free and work with Vista. (Microsoft does
not support the use of VirtualPC 2007 on Vista Home editions, but
several people have reported that it works just fine.)

No, you can't. By your own admission, you have an OEM license for
WinXP that came with the older notebook. An OEM version must be sold
with a piece of hardware (normally a motherboard or hard rive, if not an
entire PC) and is _permanently_ bound to the first PC on which it's
installed. An OEM license, once installed, is not legally transferable
to another computer under _any_ circumstances.

You'll have to purchase a new WinXP license to go with the new
computer.

If so, do I have to remove
Windows XP from the old notebook?

You can, but you still couldn't legitimately use it on the new laptop.
(Assuming you can even install it; you probably have a BIOS-locked
Recovery CD that won't install on any computer besides the one for which
it was designed. This is an additional anti-piracy measure that most
OEMs implemented years ago.)

(I am the only user of both of these
notebooks, so I would never actually be using XP at the same time on both
notebooks.)

Irrelevant.

I have to question how hard you've tried to get those apps to run on Vista;
they should be able to run there. Have you tried Vista's compatability mode
settings?
Name the programs and someone might have some well targetted help for
you. Any idea WHY they won't run?
