I have purchased a new licence for Windows XP and I need
to know how to enter it on my laptop

Michael;
You enter the Product Key during installation.
Otherwise post back exactly what you are doing.

I have only a non-activatable disk to install (educational-
institutional, I believe)and I purcased an XP licence
separately.

Sounds like the license you purchased is not for the
particular Windows XP CD you have. A Windows XP
Product Key is not generic....it is designed to be used
with a specific version of Windows XP.

Yes, but you installed a volume licensed version, and it uses a different
type of key than the retail version of WinXP Pro, which is what you
purchased
the key for. It will not work with the installation disc you have. I
suggest finding someone who has a retail full version of WinXP Pro and
borrowing their disc to install, and use the license you purchased to
activate.
