I have a laptop that's going to be used to login to a LAN domain. The user
now wants to take the laptop home, but still have the same username and
password. Can XP be configured to handle this?

Not being a corporate server/domain person, the best I can say is to look at
using a program like NetSwitcher...

Handle what? XP caches passwords.

So if Xp caches passwords, then when the laptop is disconnected from the LAN,
he can still logon to the laptop, just without the network rescouces. Is my
thinking correct?

You should try it. Just pull out a network cable.
