Hi all

I have recently had an issue that happens when i startup my pc!
After it says the name of my pc (Compaq), i get the Windows XP logo & the leaft to right loading up image & then it goes to a page similar to the one if i wanted to go to safe mode!
It's black, with white writing!

It says the following:-

"We appologise for the inconvenience, but Windows didn't start successfully.
A Hardware or Software change might have caused this

If your pc stopped responding, restarted automatically or was automatically shut down to protect your files & folders, chose 'last known configuration' to revert to most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interupted, due to power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if your not sure what caused the problem, chose 'Start Windows as Normal'.

SAFE MODE
SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING
LAST KNOWN CONFIGURATION PROMPT
START NORMALLY

Use up & down keys to highlight your choice.
Seconds to Windows start : 28 "

This doesn't happen all the time! It mainly happens after the pc has been turned off a while & there are no rules as to when it does or doesn't happen!
I can press 'start as normal' & it will keep rebooting or let the seconds tick away & it will start as usual!!

I ran CHKDSK & it came up with nothing!

Help appreciated

Does the pc work as normal in SAFE MODE ? Have you installed anything lately ?

Is it possible that Windows Update has automatically installed an update which is conflicting with your system? . It is worth having a look at recent system restore points to see if any have been made by the system on an update install

Another possible reason for this type of random problem is Windows not shutting down properly because some background application force-closed on shutdown and yet another possibility is the computer being switched off rather than closed down - a habit my wife had which caused me many happy hours of trying to work out why my computer wouldn't start up normally
.

Hi all & thanks for your advice.

I am thinking it is something to do with what programmes are loading on start up.
It starts ok in safe mode & when i do start>run>msconfig>startup & delete all, it seems to start up ok.

I am going to have a look at what this link says

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=nph00236&dlc=en

It is unusual though as i haven't downloaded any programmes of late & yet it may be one of the ones that is in startup! I am not sure which is the one causing the problem!

I always shut down using start & turn off computer, rather than the manual way.

Hi all
This issue desn't seem to happen all the time, it just seems to happen after the pc has been off for a while!, like over night!
I have rebooted many times today, but when leaft over night, it occurs!

Also, there is no set way of dealing with it! When it happens i can let the counter count down, or start as normal, either way, it may or may not work!

I'm losing the will to live hehe.
