Hi all,

A few days ago, my profile in windows xp pro stopped working. When I tried
to log in, the start bar would flash like crazy (like it was trying to
redraw it) and I had no start button. Task-manager showed that no
applications were running. The other two profiles on my computer worked
fine, but took way too long to log in to.

In short, I copied my documents from the nasty profile, deleted it (the
profile), and created a new one. Now everything works, but very, very
slowly. It takes at least 2 or 3 times longer to boot the machine or to log
in from any of the three profiles. I figured it could be a virus, so I got
NAV 2004 pro and it did find 2 viruses (trojan.byteverify and another that I
can't remember). The files were repaired successfuly, but I still had the
speed problems. I figured the antivirus might be slowing the system down so
I unistalled it, but still the system was painfully slow to boot and log in
to. In addition, my adsl connection has slowed down to half (from 1.2mbps
to 594kbps). I don't know if this is related to the booting problem or if
it is just a coincidence.

Any help or suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated. Thanks.

I had a similar problem last year. I defragged and ran bootvis and still it
took almost 3 minutes to boot xp pro. I finally figured it out, with my all
in one HP USB printer turned on it took 3 minutes to boot, turned off it
took 35 seconds. I think it has something to do with the bios trying to
boot to the usb drive. I don't have a setting in my bios to turn this off,
so I power off the printer and turn it on when I need it.

Dukie, thanks for your help, but that doesn't seem to be the problem in my
case. I just tried shutting down, unplugging all usb and parallel devices
and re-booting, but no luck, it still takes ages to boot and log in.
