I am having a problem connecting my Toshiba laptop to the
Internet with a cable modem. I have a Cat-5 port and a
USB port that I can use. When I try to connect it using
cat-5, I can check the status of the connection, it says
sending, but nothing is received in the received part. I
called my cable company they have me try releasing the IP
address, it did not work, and they didn't have any other
suggestions that I had already tried. I did notice that
it when I typed in ipconfig /all it displayed
autoconfiguration IP address of 169.ect....I am not at my
own PC at the moment to type the actual IP number. I even
tried using the wntipcfg utility, I was able to get
0.0.0.0. for an IP, but then when I tried to renew it, it
just gave me back the same 169. IP. Are there any
settings that I need to check special in XP home edition?
I was able to connect to the cable modem and to the
Internet with no problems using a USB cable, but this just
has me stumped on why it will not work on the cat-5 port.
I also have a desktop Win 98 machine, I do not have them
both on the Internet at the same time, but I was able to
connect using the cat-5 port on the PC with no problems.
I also checked device manager on the XP, no conflicts are
showing, device is enabled and working properly. Any
input would be greatly appreciated. thanks...... After I
get this solved I do want to invest in a router so that I
can have both the laptop xp and desktop 98 connected to
the Internet.

Sounds like your RJ45 network adapter is disabled or
configured improperly. Can you connect it to your other PC
via a cross-over cable and see if you can communicate
through it at all? Or, have you used the on-board network
adapter for anything successfully?

Try browsing through your BIOS settings to see if it is
enabled. Also, there is a pssibility that it is defective
or broken. Toshiba tech support should be able to help you
out there.

I assume that the TCP/IP settings for the on-board network
card is set to accept DHCP addressing. If not, then it
should be.

Good luck.

Have you used teh W98 machine to connect to the Internet
through your cable modem ??
Most cable modems will remember the MAC address from the
PC that was connected.
Try to turn your modem off (cut the power) for at least
30 seconds, then boot the modem and connect your XP
machine...
Should work fine if your XP machine is setup correctly.
