My XP was installed over a re-formatted hard drive after I
had a ME System on it. The computer manufactor said he
thought I would be much happier with XP then ME.
XP installed at shop. I brought home and first installed
Norton Internet Security 2003.
Then tried to install my older Epson 740 - could not be
installed because it did not have correct "certification".
I then tried to install my Palm M500 software. No good.
Now computer comes on & appears to boot up and then
freezes up & nothing works.
Can anybody out there give me suggestions so I can get my
#%&**** computer to work?
Thanks

Would you like to give it another go? You know, a little less of the ancient
history... I did this... I did that... they did the other... and a bit more
of a description around the real problem? How do you expect us highly
skilled technical people to help you with woefully adequate descriptions
like yours? Maybe you could repost and just say "It doesn't work! HELP
ME!!!" But don't use caps like I just did. People might think you're
shouting.

Using proper grammar is not shouting. XP is a proper name as
is ME. Lost Dream, chill out.

And while the depths of a technical description are spare,
there is enough here to go on, especially since this
computer has just been resurrected.

I'd start all over. Reformat and reinstall the Win XP os. It
will be the fastest, and most certain way to start clean.

In the alternative (not really encouraged here) I suppose
you could troubleshoot from safe mode, assuming you can get
that far. Remove all installed software, not XP, and using
the system restore utility (if you have XP Pro), go back to
the last stable registry before you originally installed
software.

After recovery to an operating state:

If installing NSW 2003, be sure to turn off NAV and NProtect
before trying to install other software. I have found that
CleanSweep (which I like), can also get in the way
installing software (which defeats its purpose!).

The issue of certificates can relate to whether the Epson
740 drivers are compatible with XP. That's a problem with
XP: older applications and drivers are out-of-date. Check
the Epson website for updated drivers.

Hope this starts you on the route to success.

Get on the website for your Epson and whatever else does
not work and see if there are any updated drivers for your
hardware compatible with Windoes XP

Who is the computer manufacturer? It is stated time after
time after time to check the hardware and software comp-
atability lists before installing XP. Your printer drivers should
be here. Don't worry about the _certification message_.
I must have a half dozen of them and my PC works just
fine.

You may not need to install a driver for that. Windows XP often
automatically detects commonly used printers. Did you look in "Control
Panel"/"Printers and Other Hardware"/"View installed printers or fax
printers" to see if WinXP installed it for you? You can also browse the
"Windows Catalog" (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog/) to see if your
particular hardware is there (although I couldn't find it).

I checked Epson's site
(http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supAdvice.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1

and it says:

Question:What Epson printers are automatically supported in Microsoft's new
Operating System, Windows XP?

Answer:Windows XP has built-in support for the following Epson Printer
Products:

Stylus Color 740 ESC/P 2
