XP installation

I have checked to see if my anthlon 600, 256mb memory
computer would be okay for upgrade from Win 98 to XP Pro.
I am a student and I need the upgrade to communicate with
campus activity. However, there is a warning on the
package that I cannot do a (default) installation as I
would prefer. They claim the system will become
unstable. I do not want to rely on my CD backup (I think
it's good). I am connected to the internet and do NOT
want to do a new installation and format my disk. Please
advise me on a go around or patch that might help this
situation

Hi,

I would just do the upgrade. There is no reason not to, as you can always go
back and do the format/clean installation if it doesn't work as expected.

Could you please give the exact text of the warning you are reading? And
where on the package it states this as well as where you got it from?

Default? Do you mean "upgrade"?

Although many people will tell you that formatting and installing
cleanly is the best way to go, I disagree. Unlike with previous
versions of Windows, an upgrade to XP replaces almost everything,
and usually works very well.

My recommendation is to at least try the upgrade, since it's much
easier than a clean installation. You can always change your mind
and reinstall cleanly if problems develop.
