I'm doing a clean install of Windows XP Home. The
problems is that during setup, the computer hangs and
stops responding. MS Knowledge Base Article 282195
proposes a solution when "the computer stops responding
when installing XP on a computer with an i815 chip set
motherboard." It states to disable the Legacy USB Support
within BIOS. By doing this, it disables any usage of the
USB ports.

The problem I have is that I only have a USB keyboard and
my PS/2 keyboard port is out of whack (which is what MS
suggests to use in place of the USB keyboard). Aside from
having to get my PS/2 keyboard port fixed, is there any
other way around this so I can finish XP setup?

Probably not but even moving to the PS/2 keyboard may not resolve the
issues. Since you had a previous OS on the system, you might want to start
by reinstalling that, then place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup
screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility."

If anything turns up beyond what you alread know, it should be addressed
before trying to install XP either clean or as an upgrade since anyting the
compatibility check finds can halt setup. It's possible, if the check finds
something and you are able to resolve it that you might be able to get setup
going.

On the other hand, the problem might be the "out of whack" PS/2 port.
Unless that port has been completely disabled in the BIOS, it's possible
it's what's causing setup to choke.
