XP installation problem

Hi there,

I'm trying to upgrade / replace windows 98 with XP Pro. I
chose the full installation option from the Installation
Wizard and after a while the computer rebooted to a blue
screen. After navigating my way through a series of
questions regarding hard drive partitioning I receive an
error message saying the installation cannot proceed due
to there being another operating system installed on the
computer.

I quit the installation process but every time I reboot
the PC I get an option to select an operating system. I
can choose Windows XP and Microsoft Windows (the 98
version). Are there some XP files on my PC that are
causing this to happen? If so, how can I remove them so
Wimdows 98 is the default operating system?

Cheers,
D

Hi,

Yes XP leaves some files on the hard disk during the
inital installation phase. You can do the following to
remove the line Windows XP from the start up menu.

Boot into windows 98. Open the file c:\boot.ini and this
will be a hidden, readonly file. Change the attributes to
archive. open this file with notepad and then delete the
line windows xp from the file and save it again. now you
will be able to boot directly into windows 98 without
getting the menu.
