Where do I begin ...?

I began having problems with my computer and suspected a
virus. Installed the latest Norton it detected no
problems. On line scans did not show anything. But I was
not happy with norton and removed it.

The problem got so bad that all it would do was get into a
loop of restarting and windows would not come up on the
screen before it would restart again. Also the hard drive
was making a clicking noise (like a relay clicking).

I used FDisk on the drive re-formatted and tried to re-
load the operating system. It failed immediatly (blue
screen with errors). I suspected problems with the drive
or some virus that I could not get off the drive.

I installed a brand new out of the box Maxtor 30 gig
drive. Used the Maxtor software to format the drive. Tried
to install a "New out of the box" XP home edition. It got
further then before. But, it would not recognise (for
licensing) win 98 disk (2 different ones) but it did
recognise win XP pro. Then it failed when it tried to
format the drive. It was telling me to check my drivers
and be sure that new equipment was installed properly.

Thinking that there was some hardware conflict I removed
all (one at a time) of the PCI devices. Nothing helped
same thing each time.

Then I got the bright Idea of trying the other xp disk.
Bang, loaded right up fine, except for the last 1 minute
of installation. The program shut down with an unexpectd
error. I reloaded a second time with no hickup.

Am I to assume that this is a bad cd? Or could I still be
having some system problems?

Use the Maxtor tools to check the drive. That clicking sound is usually a
sign the drive has failed or is about to fail.
