xp installation on new hard drive

I had anew hard drive installed in my laptop-my desktop screen is not filled.
There is a black border surrounding it. Help please????

Thank you for your sarcastic response. I am 72 years old -I sucessfully installed xp on my old hard drive with no problems. and hired someone to install a new hard drive and he installed Xp. The person before you gave me a rational solution which worked and did not make me feel stupid. Yours made me feel stupid- my problem. Anyway I do appreciate your time. When all else fails read instructions, right?-did not occur to me. went to web sites instead. Thanks again.
