Is there any way of installing the bare minimum for
windows XP so as to save my small hard drive?

Hi,

You can custom install, and disable things like System Restore, however,
frankly, you will be sorely disappointed with performance if you insist on
putting WinXP on an undersized drive. I would not recommend installing it
without at least 3GB, and preferably 5GB, of space available.

If the hardware is not adequate, there is no reason to install XP. If you
consider the cost of upgrading a marginal system to the minimum XP specs
along with the cost of upgrading incompatible software and hardware would be
comparable to a entry level system with XP pre installed and probably twice
or more as fast as what you would get upgrading the old system. You could
then for a very small expense network the two systems. You would have access
to all your old software and hardware and be able to share the data between
the two machines. You can even share the same keyboard, mouse and monitor
with a kvm switch.

I am assuming your system has less than 10 gig hard drive, less than 128 meg
ram, 400 to 800 MHz CPU, 8 meg or less video, possibly a Win 9X only
scanner, CD burning software not compatible with XP, etc. To gain anything
more than the stability of XP compared to Win9X/Me you would need to spend
at least $300 and wind up with a system not really any better and quite
possibly slower than what you started with.
Check around the net for deals on systems and do not think of refurbished
systems as returned because of defects. They are usually returned because
the purchaser was the defect. 8-)

With hard drive space so cheap, it doesn't seem to make
sense to try and do this. Why not just get a bigger hard
drive? A new machine with twice the HD space will cost
less than the 100+ hours of trouble you will have trying
to run XP on a small hard drive.

Just my opinion
