HELP required.

I have had to reformat my HDD, and I am trying to load my
copy of Windows XP home addition. The CD won't 'Auto
Run'. I have used a Windows 98 Start Up disc to load
basic CD-ROM drivers, but when I type in x:\setup where X
is the drive number I get an error message 'Cannot Run
this programme in DOS Mode. I then scoured the Microsoft
Website and downloaded 'Setup discs for floppy install'
This programme creates six floppy discs. I started to
load them and was doing OK until disc 4 then I got an
error message saying 'The file abp48qn5.sys is corrupt
press any key to continue'
If you follow the prompt the machine just reboots itself.
All I want to do is load XP any advice. Thanks Chris

Hi

First, change the boot sequence to make CD-rom the first boot device
Follow the user manual or mobo manual for how to boot into BIOS
Boot into BIOS, click the boot tab and then change the boot sequence, save and exit
Insert the XP CD into the CD tray and then restart the computer

Boot with the XP CD in the drive.
When you see the message on the boot screen to "Press any key in order to boot from the CD," do so

After loading drivers and files, you should be taken to a screen with the following

To Setup Windows XP now, press ENTER
To Repair a Windows XP Installation using Recovery Console press R
To Quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3

In your case, press ENTER

Agree to the License agreement by pressing F8

You will then be taken to a screen with two options

To repair the selected Windows XP installation press R
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press ESC

This will bring you to a partition map where you can delete, create and format partitions
Select the drive you wish to format, delete the partition, then create a new partition, format as desired and continue with XP installation

Hope it helps

Pete

If you had looked for "How to Install XP" while you were
looking for the floppy disk set, you'd have found the
instruction to set the CDROM to be the first boot device in
the BIOS and booted the CD. The install program is on the
XP CD, you do not install XP on a clean drive using DOS.

after using windows98 start up disc type cd x:\i386 and
then type x:\winnt.exe. This is a dos based program for
installing xp.cd is change directory and x is the drive
letter of your CDPlayer that xp disk is in.
