I have a new laptop that I am trying to install XP Professional on. The XP
version is pre SP1 and the laptop has a new hard drive with no other OS. The
installer does the initial file copy ok but when it trys to start Windows for
the first time I get a stop message: 0x0000007B.

HP Pavilion DV7-1020us, Intel P7350 @ 2G, nvidia GeForce 9600M

Any Ideas would be appreciated.

Either you're leaving alot of the installation process out,or you failed to
perform them...1st,what happened to formating the hd,creating a partition,
both need to be done by xp 1st.Boot to xp cd,at menu screen, select install,
validate older windows OS with cd,or if you have full xp version, delete all
partition(s),create one,let xp format the hd & install auto.

Check at HP's site to see if they provide XP drivers for that Model Number
Laptop.
If they don't, forget installing XP on it.
