xp inst. can't find tcpip.sys

During the install of xp pro on a laptop, the install
begins copying files from the cd and then halts saying
that it cannot find tcpip.sys. Consequently after install
I don't have a tcpip stack (i'm guessing). ping command
yields "cannot contact ip server" and ipconfig get an
internal error. Have used the same cd on a desktop system
to install xp and had no problems.
How can I get tcpip up and running.

its not the disk its the laptop and its networking
