Hi All.

I've got two machines:

-- Windows 2000 Server that has a DSL Internet connection,
works great. It also has a 3Com Etherlink XL NIC used for
a home network.

-- Windows XP Professional, also has a 3Com Etherlink XL
NIC for home network connection.

I have Internet Connection Sharing enabled on the Win2K
box and set to share via the 3Com card. The card has IP
address 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0.
Default gateway is empty. DNS addresses are 4.2.2.1 and
4.2.2.2 (I believe they were put there by Verizon DSL
Setup).

I can browse the Internet wonderfully on the Win2K Server
box, hardly any delay (as under normal circumstances).

The problem is on the WinXP box. I can browse certain web
sites fine (CNN, www. and support.microsoft.com), though
take a bit longer to come up. This is OK, I suppose. But
the real issue is that other sites such as
windowsupdate.microsoft.com and www.cpdl.org never come up
and time out consistently.

All the troubleshooting experts in XP can't find anything
wrong. IP configuration for the 3Com o the XP client is
set to automatic for IP address and DNS. When I run
IPCONFIG, it reports back 192.168.0.2 and the matching
subnet mask, as well as 192.168.0.1 for the gateway
(correct).

Why the delay and the trouble browsing only some sites?
Any Verizon DSL customers out there that have a similar
setup? Thanks for your help.

Erik

Hello,

shot in the dark here.
On your XP box, do you have the ICF turned on?

Hi,

I had the same trouble some time ago. Your W2K system is OK. But on the XP
machine go into regedit and locate your Etherlink XL in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces
(it might be controlset002 or other). The right card contains your known IP
address.

Create a new key :
Value Type: REG_DWORD Number

Now, the number to enter is maximum 1502. don't ask me why. You have to
decrease it by steps of 14 (that worked for me) until the "unreachable"
sites come up.

Best regards.
