XP icons revert to default on restart or log on

I have changed the 'My Computer' and the 'Recycle Bin' icons using the
Customize Desktop tab in WinXP Pro. However every time I reboot or log off,
they revert back to the default icons. All other icons that I changed using
the the change icon option of a shortcut stay. Does anyone have a solution?

This was happening a week ago and I recently rebuilt the PC and it is just a
basic XP install with all the latest updates and it is doing the same thing.
I am not on a network. I am on a stand alone pc and I am trying this with
the admin account. And I an not running any "Icon software" This is
basically a fresh install with updates. I am however running the latest
tweak from MS.

Something interesting:

If I save the theme and apply it, it changes the icon. If I log off and log
back on one of 2 things happen. Either the theme changed to say "My current
theme" or it stays on the saved theme. Either way the icons revert back to
the default. The funny thing is if I change the theme and then change it
back to the new theme that I saved, the icons return to the new ones. But
again, if I reboot or just log off, they again revert back to the default
ones.

Any suggestions?

Hi Craig,

Change the DefaultIcon here:

My Computer

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon

Recycle Bin

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\DefaultIcon

If that doesn't work and it should, try changing it here:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID:

{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon
{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\DefaultIcon
/top10faqs.htm

Kelly,

Okay that worked, but now the Recycle bin will not change once somthing is
deleted. I have to refresh (F5) in order for it to change to "Full" or
"empty"

Any more tips?

Craig

What exactly does this do? And is there a way to perform this repair
manually rather than the reg file? No offence, but I prefer not to run a
file like this at random.

Craig

Craig,

Download the regfile and read it in Notepad. Simply said and read:

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\
{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\DefaultIcon]
@="Shell32.dll,31"
"Full"="Shell32.dll,32"
"Empty"="Shell32.dll,31"

It deletes the key then replaces it with the proper full and empty values.

Hi Kelly,

I tried every step you said here .. and the darn icon
names still keep switching to default names after a reboot.

Is there another way to hardcode the names into the system so that they
never change? :)

Thanx so much for your time

What exactly happens. What is listed in the registry before and after it changes at
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\DefaultIcon
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

(which are the four keys from kelly) and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons

Select the key, right click, Export, r/c the exported file and choose Edit, copy and paste here. Before and after.

LOL, well, it's changed, I don't have the "before" now.

What changed where the value in those keys: example "Recycle Bin" to
"Trash".

But the default icon names keep coming up after every reboot anyway.

I asked before and after so we can see what is changing.

Well maybe a solution for some of us.

For those of us who have been experiencing the issue of the 'My Computer,
Recycle Bin, etc, icons changing back to the default icons after reboot, I
think I may have found a solution to this problem...at least for my specific
situation. Maybe this will help others too.

If you have an Nvidia card, take a look at the services and set the "Nvidia
Display Driver Helper" or the "Nvidia Display Driver Service" to manual.
From what I understand, this is similar to MS error reporting. If you are
concerned about your NView features not working (if you use it like I do),
have no fear, this did not have any effect on mine.

Hope this helps some people.

Craig

P.S. Sorry for the cross-post, but I have seen this issue in both groups and
thought it might help
