Is there somewhere that I can get a basic icon manager and icons sets
for Windows XP for free? I have had the Wincustomize products in the
past, but I could not afford the constant renewal fees. ;-Deano

Some places to download free icon files...

Here's how to get to a few free icons that you already have.

On the Change Icon dialog, in the Look for icons in this file box, paste the
path and hit Enter. Or use the Browse button to browse through folders to
find the file you want.

%systemroot%\system32\shell32.dll
%SystemRoot%\system32\Desk.cpl
%SystemRoot%\system32\Inetcpl.cpl
%SystemRoot%\system32\Mmsys.cpl
%SystemRoot%\system32\Mshtml.dll
%SystemRoot%\system32\Main.cpl
%SystemRoot%\system32\PIFMGR.DLL
%SystemRoot%\system32\Progman.exe
%SystemRoot%\system32\Sysdm.cpl
%programfiles%\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe

I'd like to edit some of those icon files. If I do that, will XP still let
me use them? Or is there some kind of check-sum that would prevent me from
editing the colors or replacing an icon or two in the *.dll files?

I would not fool around editing the ico files within a.dll, .cpl or .exe
file. If you extract the ico files first, that's one thing.
