I also want to get this to Microsoft but I never found a
support email address.....help
Dear Microsoft,

I just purchased a Toshiba laptop PC and a high end HP
desktop PC, they both have Windows XP Home. Edition. I
have been very disappointed in there performance although
the laptop works better than the Desktop.

The HP 854n w/ media center is really disappointing...here
are just a few of the problems that exist and hopefully
you can tell me what the problem is. I took the HP back to
Fry's Electronic where I purchased it a month ago and they
said I should upgrade to XP Pro or Windows 2000 I'll see
what you have to offer. I am 60 yrs. Old and was laid off
a year ago and haven't found a job yet so I don't have a
lot of money to play with.

The PC came with a system restore which will let you put
it back to x date in the past and I have had to restore it
a dozen times.

Problems:

1. Constantly asking do I want windows to remember
passwords.I click yes and hasn't remembered a one.
2. Three time after boot up it will have 2 desktops
one on top of the other the one on top is functional, I
accidently found the top one by drag it down from the top
of the screen and seeing another one behind it that was
functional. I couldn't get rid of the top one.so I had to
restore system back to the last safe point which was some
days earlier and lost all that had done in that time.
3. Some times when I right click on the desktop not
window appears but if I move my mouse to the right the
menu appears 1 line at a time.its like its hidden.
4. I have a 2.56 ghz Pentium 4 and it is slower than
my 1.4 3 yr. Old Gateway now this may or may not be a XP
problem. With all the problems with this PC I have to
think that XP is a contributing factor.
5. Fry's Electronics checked and could find nothing
wrong with the PC(hardware) so you're my only hope. Also I
have the fastest DSL Verizon offers so I am not
complaining about slow internet access.
6. I also maintain all recommended updates on a weekly
basis.

Thanks

.
I am NOT a Microsoft MVP, and yes, you are right,
WindowsXP is much slower than previous versions. The
main reason is loading, unloading and saving settings of
your PC to where it was in "good health". Disabling
programs at startup will make your PC run much smoother
and faster. Having two desktops is usually caused by the
user penetrating unfamiliar territory and incorrect
setups. I have one suggestion for you Roger, and that is
to go to your nearest Bookstore and purchase a copy of
WindowsXP for Dummies, it costs about $20 and is an
excellent reference book.

I can debate to the Nth degree regarding the speed of XP.
It is faster than any other OS depending solely upon your
skill and knowledge. MS should have warned that this OS is
for eXPerianced users. Ones who have the basic skills
needed to obtain the latest drivers and to surf the net
for basic performance enhancing tweaks. www.dougknox.com
and www.kellys-korner-xp.com both have tips and tweaks.
Out of the box XP is set up to be middle of the road but
with only a few tweaks it will out perform any other OS.
It just depends on what you want to do and how much you
are willing to learn.Keep smiling.
