Hi, A friend of mine claims that during the intial setup of windows XP home
he was given the choice to
pick up dowloads that failed where they left off. This would allow not
having to start again after the first
attempt fail. Have never seen this option, but I have seen it work on a
machine he claims to have set that
parameter. We were downloading .net 2.0 and it failed at a 75% point, but
when we tried to do the download
again, it picked up where it left off.
If there is such a parameter, can someone please point it out? Would save
me a lot of grief.
Thanks,

AFAIK it's default.
Click Start > settings > Control Panel > Security Center applet.
Click the Automatic Update icon.
Click the link "How does automatic updates work?".
Expand the tree so Overview is expanded.
Click Automatic updates: FAQ.
Scroll to the What If...? section and click the second item listed.

The BITS service is what enables this feature on SP2 systems.
BITS=Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

An update is available for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
2.0 for Windows XP

Thanks Sharon,
It works like a charm.
Have to ask though why this service is not automatic by default. It's a
huge win for a lot of users, yet when I
asked around nobody ever heard of it.

Al

You're welcome! No idea why it isn't on by default. It was included with
the original version of XP but didn't really do much back then. In fact,
many "optimizing" sites would recommend disabling it since the benefit of
using it was not very apparent before the MS update sites tapped into it
with the BITS update that came out shortly before SP2.
