Hey....my parents bought a new computer and it has XP Home
OS on it. They would like to upgrade it to XP
Professional. To do this...could I just buy the Microsoft
XP Professional Upgrade CD? The only concern I have is
that XP Home is not listed on the back as an upgradeable
OS....the box says it can upgrade 98, 98se, me, and 2000.

can i just buy that or do i need to buy the entire os
again?

thanks for the help

Yes, although it doesn't say so on the box, this is a legitimate
upgrade path and the upgrade does work.

But are you sure you want to do this? Are you aware that XP Home
and Professional are identical except that Professional includes
a few features (mostly related to security and networking)
missing from Home? Most home users don't need and would never use
these extra features and will see no benefits by upgrading.

I say stick with XP Home you won't really notice a difference between
the two

Although I agree that *most* home users won't notice a difference
between the two, it's irresponsible to say that to someone, when
you nothing about their needs or desires. There are a fair number
of people who need or legitimately want the Professional version.

You spent $350 for it? Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
That has got to be the funniest thing I have heard in awhile!

Well if you weren't so ignorant, you would know that not everyone in this
newsgroup lives in the US, and uses US currency.
$350 CND is about $250 US

Now if that ain't the pot calling the kettle black!
Your posting from Rogers so it's obviouse your in Canada,
you can get XP Pro, retail, Non OEM for $225.00 CANDIAN.
If you payed $350.00 CANADIAN, then you paid too much.

Please provide a link to support this claim.
BTW, I suppose I should say that it's $350 include tax. Without tax, its
$299.99

Why would you doubt the site?
Pricewatch simply lists the prices that other companies sell thier products.
It's actually one of the most highly respected sites of this type and a
major source of hardware and software prices for a large number of IT
professionals. That being said, they do not have any control over the
companies listed there, they are simply a price search engine, so as always
it's still buyer beware.
