XP Home won't shut down

It gets to the "Windows is shutting down" screen and then
it hangs indefinitely. This didn't always happen but I
don't remember when it started.
 
Rich--thanks for the tip. I tried pretty much everything
suggested there but no luck. Now I'm working through a
list of suggestions from Dell.
