My computer won't get beyond the message "checking for new verstion of
windows update software....." The system just hangs on that message - very
frustrating!

Fyi, microsoft.public.windowsupdate is a better newsgroup for
Windows Update questions.


You could try the steps in this post to try to get WU to work:

If nothing there worked, try the steps in this post:
