XP home will now allow any new items of hardware to install

Is there some way of resetting Xp so that I can install
new items of hardware thru USB connection? My Sony Vaio
600 notebook will not proceed with installion of any new
items. The two most recent are Plantronics headset and
Canon scanner. Both these items install fine on my other
PCs. I am sure that The vaio is the problem. I have treid
using system rstore back to an ealier point, but this
does not work either, the items still will not install
the appropriate drivers.

Coulr you describe what happens in terms of menus that appear/don't appear
when you plugin these hardware devices? Without this informaiton its hard to
diagnose your problem.
