Running Xp home on a relatively new machine, BUT when I try to shut down the machine it will not turn off... the windows is shutting down screen will stay on the monitor for hours and the only way I can turn it off is to switch the computer off...

This has been going on for 3-4 weeks now...

what is the solution.... ? Sorry But I am a 60+ year old guy who can turn a wrench but has absolutely no lnowledge of how computers function..

Thanks Bo

you have a program running in the background that is not shutting down.
Boot to safe mode and see if it shuts down fine. If it does you need to go
into task manager and look at the programs that are running.

Normal windows programs do not have any capitol letters. most will just
have the first letter. try ending the process of the ones that are running
and see which one allows the computer to shut down. Once you have this
figured out go to start-run type msconfig and go to the startup tab and
remove the check box from that program. That should take care of it!
