When booting up the computer with Win XP Home, I get the
following message:

Windows XP could not start because the following files
were missing or corrupted: c:\windows\system32
\config\system

I looked on the drive and the file does exist. Is there a
way to recover the file or fix the problem without using
the recover CD?

Worked beautifully--thanks!

As a matter of interest I had this same problem and went into recovery
console. I did a CHKDSK with full fix options (cannot remember what they
were now) and CHKDSK fixed errors and then my PC was fine!.
