Hello:
I have XP Home Edition at work. I have 2000 Professional
at home. I have bought, some time ago now, XP home for
home.

I was told, when it would not load, it would not load b/c
2000P was too sophisticated and I would lose some
documents. Can anyone tell me how to evaluate the loss,
and how to override so that I can install XPHome on my
computer.

The extra cost of XPProfessional is a stretch. I want
Home to work.

Thanks to anyone out there. Jean Christie

The only way to install Windows XP Home on a computer running
Windows 2000 is to reformat the drive and perform a "clean install".
Only Windows XP Professional can upgrade over Windows 2000.

To perform a "clean install" of Windows XP Home Edition, perform
a backup of your files, then follow this procedure:

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

9. If you happen to run into any installation difficulties, use the following resources:

You won't be able to do it. As soon as you place the XP Home Edition
Upgrade CD in the drive, you will receive a notice to that effect. This is
not an approved upgrade path as it would be a "downgrade," just as you
cannot go from XP Pro to XP Home Edition without doing a clean install.

Even if you managed to do it, it would likely destroy your setup, there's no
way of knowing what you'd lose or even if you'd be able to boot to the
desktop.

Since you would need to clean install as the other posts advise, I would
suggest you stay with 2000 and make sure you have the latest service packs
applied. You would actually be giving up features by replacing it with XP
Home and the performance and stability are basically the same.
