XP Home vs. Network

Hi

I am trying to connect to my XP Home Laptop to the network
in my university. We have all kinds of OS in the building.
The connection to the internet and the mailserver works
fine. I can also connect to a printer if I know the IP
address.
But when I want to connect to other computers this doesn't
work. The network-neighbourhood is empty and if I try to
find other computers by IP number my computer doesn't find
them. Neither can other computers connect to my computer.

Can anyone help me?

Also, WinXP Home can't join a domain only a Workgroup.
