After closing Turbo Tax 2003 a message appeared on screen
that some files had been corrupted in XP so I needed to
reinstall Windows XP. I inserted the CD and began the
process on 4/4/04 at about 8:30 a.m. It is still running
and it's now 4/5/04 1:30 p.m. Frequents reboots have
occurred. "Installing Windows" is still highlighted.

Any solutions?

This doesn't sound great. You might want to try shutting down and pulling
all unnecessary cards out of the system. Then restart with the CD-Rom in the
drive. It should recognize that there has been a previous install attempt
and ask if you want to continue at which time answer Yes and hopefully XP
will finish.

Running Turbo Tax should have nothing o do with corrupt XP (system) files.
I assume that this was a coincidence. In fact, running most application
software should not impact system files.

It is possible that your hard disk is failing, or at least has a few bad
spots. Therefore, before reinstalling XP, try running the recovery console
directly from the XP CDROM and do a CHKDSK C: /R (assuming that XP was
installed on C:, else change the drive letter). If CHKDSK finds a
file-system problem, it may be able to fix it. If it finds a bad spot, the
/R option will lock out that spot. If CHKDSK does not work, stops, gives a
fatal errror, then try deleting the partiton and recreating it. In the
recovery console type HELP to get a list of commands, then a command
followed by /? to get help for that command.

The following are links to info about the recovery console:
