XP Home: user access to programs

We are using winXP Home in a laboratory, so we have a single admin and a
single user to all students.
When I install programs like Irfanview, they ask me whether I wanted to make
it available only to the admin or to all users. Others, although compatible
with winXP, don't, and when the students log in, they cannot access some of
them. This is the case of the scanner manager (scan manager, genius,
kyescan.exe, returns the message that it is "unable to find the necessary
registries") and Curriculo Lattes (returns message that "cannot load the mdb
file or you don't have permission to view these data").
I believe this is a matter of repositioning the programs in the registry;
how do I do that?

Hi Ibch,

It has nothing to do with the registry. Chances are your data is sitting in
a directory with restrictive NTFS permissions. It's pretty easy to fix:

1) Open Windows Explorer.
2) Open the drive letter (usually C) then surf to the parent directory to
which the program was installed (i.e.: c:\Program Files if the program is
installed in c:\Program Files\Irfanview).
3) Right-click on that directory and click Properties.
4) In the Properties windows select the Security tab.
Chances are here you will see an entry for Everyone that has Read
permissions. Click Full Access and then click Apply.

Your program should work for all users now. If it doesn't you may have to
repeat the step for subdirectories, but that's all it is - NTFS permissions.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Hi,

Thanks for the tip, but it didn't work. If you mean the security settings in
the share properties tab, the configuration of the scanner program and Lattes
are the same as all other programs.
When I right-rlick on the program folder, the properties window returns only
three tabs, "Geral", "Compartilhamento" (=sharing) and "Personalize"(the
change icon etc. options).

Well, since the worst problem is the scanner that only works for the adm,
the complete error message is

"Program was not installed successfully. Unable to find the necessary
registries".

I also tried to install the program in the internal shared folder, but it
didn't work either.

Any other ideas?
