OK, I've just upgraded to a new motherboard (Asus A8V) and Athlon 64 CPU.
Had to boot from the Windows CD to get things going. I chose the option to
fix an existing Windows installation and mostly it worked. However I have 2
problems (that I know of so far). Windows will not recognize a USB mouse,
but my USB printer, thumbdrive and bluetooth network adapter all work fine.
The other problem is reading data from the CDROMs. When I booted from CD to
fix Windows the data transfer rate seemed normal (that is, fast), but now
that Windows is running reading from the CD is painfully slow. Plus, files
on CD won't run. For example, if I put an audio CD in the drive Windows
knows what it is but will not play any audio files. I can browse it
(slowly), but not launch the files. If its a data CD I can browse it, but
no .exe or .inf files will run. Hard disk access is fine. Anybody ever
experience anything like this?

After you got Windows running by doing a repair install did you then install
the chipset drivers, etc for the new motherboard?

At first I couldn't because my CDROM was unusable. I finally tried the slave
CD and it worked fine. I installed the A8V drivers, but the master CD still
wouldn't work. I finally discovered that it apparently had been
auto-detected by the MB to be compatible with UltraDMA mode 4, which it
apparently is not. After I changed it to mode 2 in BIOS, it worked fine in
Windows. As of now, the computer works fine, but I still cannot get it to
properly recognize a USB mouse. Every other USB device works fine. Just a
mouse is not recognized. I have a wireless mouse which I got working by
using a USB-PS2 adapter and connecting it to the PS2 port. The mouse works,
but the extra buttons don't. I have removed/installed the OEM drivers,
which were just fine before the MB/CPU upgrade, but the resulting mouse
control panel is sans the controls for the extra buttons. When I connect it
to the USB port, Winblows insists on recognizing it as an HID compliant
device, but not specifically a mouse and the thing doesn't work at all. I
can live without the extra buttons, but it is irritating. I've tried
searching the registry for leftover Belkin mouse stuff, but I don't see
anything obvious. When I originally installed it Winblows recognized as an
HID compliant device, but gave me a choice of selecting an HID mouse driver.
That choice is gone now and not even a corded USB mouse will work.

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Your installation is F'ed up. You can either spend a week hunting down
and fixing all the little problems, or you can back up your important
stuff and do a *clean* reinstall.
