XP Home upgrade and RAM capacity

I upgraded to XP Home and I can no longer boot up with
512 (2 256 cards) of RAM installed. If I backoff my RAM
to 384 (2 cards 128 and 256) everything seems to be
fine. I have eliminated the cards as the problem and my
BIOS shows the 512 installed so I know it is not a
motherboard or chip set incompatibility problem.
Previously on the same computer I ran ME with 512 and had
no problems. Any help out there?

Thanks Joe

You had a similar problem? Did it get fixed? If so
How? If Not. Post another message concerning problem.
Maybe we can get more atention and a fix. Since you
responded to my question the board shows a RE response.
Somebody may think we got an answer.

Hey there,

I haven't had any real problems myself, but I do know
that XP is much more finicky when it comes to different
kinds/brands of RAM than previous versions of windows.

One thing that you might try (since it seems that you
have 2 256 chips and 1 128 chip) is putting in the other
256 RAM chip with the 128, or just swapping the locations
of the two 256's. If nothing else works, hopefully you
can still return the RAM to wherever you bought it from
and get another brand that will work. There's no real
guaranteed way of knowing what different brands of RAM
will work. I bought a Dell desktop a while ago that came
with 256 MB RAM, and for gaming desperately needed an
upgrade in that department. I threw in another 256 MB
chip by AzenRam and had no problems. Then when I started
to get into digital photgraphy, I upgraded again, and
removed the AzenRam chip (and put it into my girlfriend's
computer, no problems), and put in 512 MB of Kingston
memory. Thus far, no buggy happenings yet. I've also
upgraded my SODIMM Ram in my laptop with 256 MB of
Kingston.

Hope this helps,

Nick

That is incorrect. Windows doesn't care what kind or brand of memory your
computer has.

I can relate to your problem. Every since I installed my XP( with 128mb of RAM) Now when I tried to reinstall my Cox Internet, I get a message saying I only have 120mb of RAM. I checked in my system manager and it says I have 128mb of RAM? Can anyone help? I was going to get more RAM, but after reading what you went through I know I should be able to fix it. I still wouldn't mind more RAM, but I don't think I should have to because I upgraded to XP. What do you think?

Blondie;
the more RAM the better.
256 MB is usually the recommended minimum.
The missing 8 MB RAM is most likely shared with the video card.

You do not have enough memory.. see your pc as a car/truck/SUV and the OS as
a trailer.. the larger the trailer, the more powerful a car you need to pull
it.. upgrade memory to 512mb and you will get decent performance.. 512mb is
really not that much these days bearing in mind that even cheap motherboards
support up to 2gb..
