Hi, I'm currently a user of XP Home and I have an unopened copy of the XP Pro Full NFR Version. I want to install it, but I don't want to reinstall all my programs. Will this version require me to do so?

If you have an "OEM version" of Windows XP Pro, you cannot use
it to upgrade over XP Home.....it must be installed "clean" on a freshly
reformatted drive. If you have the "retail version", you can use it to
upgrade over XP Home, thereby retaining your programs.

Greetings --

Yes, you should be able to perform an upgrade using an NFR
edition. (At least, I've always been able to do so, so far.)

There are, however, no iron-clad, 100% guarantees when it comes to
updating any kind of computer software, much less an operating system.
WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating system
while simultaneously preserving your data and translating as many
personalized settings as possible. The process is designed to be, and
normally is, quite painless. That said, things can go wrong, in a
small number of cases. If your data is at all important to you, back
it up before proceeding.

Carey, FYI, the NFR (Not For Resale) versions are special licenses
for copies of the software that Microsoft distributes at Launch Events
and similar seminars. Aside from the licensing restriction that
prohibits their resale or redistribution, these CDs function just like
a full retail CD.

Hello Carey and others
I admire your concise replies thus I wanted to inquire about my own delimma. I own a dell desktop (OEM cd sent) It has incurred a small hair line fracture neat the center of the cd, I was told by Dell Tech Support (whom I formerly worked for) that I would have to purchase Retail XP. I want to upgrade to Pro, is it doable w/ OEM Home #1 , #2 I am contemplating Small Business Server, cost being the obstacle. Could you please advise as to my options

Kindest Regards
