XP Home to 98 Slow Internet Sharing

Using a cross-connect cable between 2 ethernet cards I
successfully networked a 350MHz laptop running Win 98 to
my 1.7 GHz desktop running Win XP Home. Desktop file
access from the laptop is fast, and desktop printer
sharing works fine. The problem remaining is that my
satellite connection yields 600k test results on my
desktop but shared over the LAN via my laptop speeds are
1/10th the speed (40k to 70k). What could be slowing it
down?

I'm having the same problem with a 2000 and xp machines.
