I purchased a windows xp home edition oem cd-rom (genuine)
The problem is, somewhere along the line, certain files
were changed. I used sfc /scannow to make sure all the
improtant files were intact, but i got a message, that
said "Files that are required for windows to run
properly, have been replaced by unrecongnized versions.
To maintain system stability, windows must restore the
original versions of these files." Network location from
which the files should be
copied,C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386/controls.man, is
not available. Windows file protection says, files that
are required for windows to run properly, must be copied
to the DLL Cache. underneath that it says, insert your
windows xp professional service pack 1 cd now. Which
makes no sense as i'm using xp home. I did use xp home cd
rom to try and change this, but was unsucessful. any help
from anyone would be much appreciated, throwing the
computer out of the window won't help.

Hi, Marcus.

Which OEM version? The one from Dell would not be the same as the one from
HP and neither of them would be like the "generic" OEM CD that you might get
from your local computer assembler. The one consistency among the OEM
versions is that, since Microsoft can't control what happens after the OEM
gets them, the OEM must assume responsibility for supporting its customers.
You might need to contact the vendor who sold this to you.

If your WinXP CD-ROM was an early copy, it would not have SP1 on it. You
should be able to get the full SP1 from Windows Update - and it should
recognize that you have the Home Edition and download the proper version for
you. This can be a problem because of the sheer size of the Service Pack;
even with broadband it might take an hour to download it. If that is a
problem, you should be able to order a copy of the SP on a CD.

No matter which version of WinXP you have, you should make it a practice to
visit Windows Update frequently to download SPs and other fixes that might
protect you from Blaster and other viruses. Be sure you have a good
firewall and antivirus program installed and working, then run Internet
Explorer and click Tools | Windows Update.

I installed a new hard drive. and used my purchased winxp
home oem cd-rom, and installed it from scarch. new drive,
new op system. so it should have no problem recongnizing
it's own cd-rom. I used this cd-rom to install this op
system, i still have the same cd-rom. Microsoft windows
xp home edition oem version 2002 service pack1. I have
not installed anything on my computer, to do with windows
xp pro. after all, it is winxp home.
