XP home sp2 logon hangs at user selection window

When I first bootup my desktop, the logon window hangs up before displaying
who can logon. There are 3 choices - owner, user1 and user2. The startup will
hang there until I reboot. the reboot usually works. I had to reboot twice
before succeeding a couple of times.
Any help is appreciated.
