XP home security patch

My father in law has just bought an up to date computer with sp2 Windows
XP home does he still need to put the security patch on before he goes
on the internet. It was a wormblaster in 2003. There was a hole in
XP.

before he even goes near the internet he needs a good anti virus
application. If you have your own pc you can download the free version of
AVG anti virus and burn it to a cd for him so he can install it on his pc.
AVG is available from www.grisoft.com
Once he is protected by an up to date anti virus application he can check
the windows update site for any new updates supplied after SP2 and download
accordingly.
It is the 'critical' updates he needs to be most interested in. These will
help protect his system from would be hackers.
He may find that, when visiting the update site, he gets other updates
offered for windows xp and maybe driver updates ( i'm saying he 'may' it all
depends upon his system) Like i have said install 'all' critical updates and
any driver updates. You can always download anything else at a later date.

Make sure that the firewall is running.
Perhaps you may want to print this:

Install a better firewall and then turn Windows Firewall off.
Install some spyware blockers.
Make sure he knows how to use the updates for all programs.

I concur re. the other security advice, but to answer the question you
actually asked - SP2 includes the specific critical updates which protect
against the Blaster and Sasser worms, and all other patches released up to
the date of SP2 itself.
